Bio
Tala Al-Ghazali graduated from the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) with an Honors Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Management, complemented by minors in Sustainability and Environmental Law and Policy. Her academic journey has been driven by a deep interest in sustainable development and environmental policy, particularly focusing on sustainability law and policy.
Tala's professional experience is extensive and varied. She currently serves as a Research Assistant under Professor Andrea Olive, contributing to projects on Communities of Faith and Environmentalism, as well as Species at Risk Conservation Policies in Peace Parks in Canada and the United States. This role involves conducting literature reviews, attending project meetings, and leading interviews with community leaders in Toronto. Additionally, Tala works as the Waste and Material Recovery Coordinator at UTM's Sustainability Office, where she recruits and trains sustainability ambassadors, educates students on waste sorting, and leads initiatives to increase waste diversion rates on campus.
Her previous roles include working as a Research Assistant for Professor Praneeta Mudliar, focusing on Cultural Ecosystem Services on Lands of Institutions of Higher Education, and as an Energy Management Summer Student with Halton Region. These experiences have equipped her with a robust skill set in research, data analysis, and sustainable resource management. Tala has also held leadership positions with the UTM Muslim Student Association, the UTM Student Association for Geography & Environment, and the Halton Newcomer Strategy's Youth Advisory Council, showcasing her commitment to community service and advocacy for inclusive environments.
In her free time, Tala enjoys watching soccer, swimming, spending time in nature, and gardening. Her diverse experiences and interests fuel her passion for environmental management and sustainability, driving her to foster sustainable practices and policies in her professional and personal life.
