Bio
Anna graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biology in June of 2022. Throughout her four years at Queen’s, she developed a keen interest in sustainability. During her third year, she had the opportunity to take the Dean’s Changemakers Challenge course, where she had to develop an idea that would make a meaningful contribution to society. She developed the idea for an app called reFRESH that aims to reduce consumer food waste, and the associated carbon dioxide emissions. She then pitched this idea to a panel of judges led by the Dean of Arts and Science. Further, in her fourth year she took two seminar courses, The Biology of Sustainability, and Biotechnology. Within the Biology of Sustainability Seminar, the linkages between Indigenous philosophical perspectives and the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals were discussed. At the end of the Biotechnology Seminar course, Anna gave a presentation about the potential of using seaweed modified through CRISPR for biofuel.
The opportunity to speak about both current sustainability issues and potential solutions, furthered Anna’s passion for sustainability, and her ambition to make a difference within the world. After developing the idea for the food waste app reFRESH, Anna was inspired to become involved with sustainability in the Queen’s community. In her fourth year, she became the Sponsorship Director for the Queen’s Sustainability Conference. The team worked together to cultivate discussions around sustainability within the Queen’s community and beyond. Specifically, the sponsorship team worked to gain sponsors for the conference through networking and connecting with both small and large companies. This summer, Anna is working as an office clerk for an equestrian competition. She is building on her previous experience in marketing, where she helped to develop articles and social media posts for an online equestrian marketplace.
Anna is also a competitive equestrian show jumping athlete and has competed across North America in competitions. She trains with Olympians Ian and Amy Millar and was on the Canadian U-21 North American Young Riders Team during the summer of 2021. The dedication and resiliency essential within top sport has transferred into her studies. She also thoroughly enjoys coaching young athletes as seen through her ski race coaching. Anna also loves to ski, play tennis, enjoy the outdoors, spend quality time with friends, and meet new people!
