Bio
Rukiya Abdulle graduated from University of Toronto with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree, double majoring in Environmental Science and Criminology & social-legal Studies as well as minoring in Environmental Management. Throughout her undergraduate studies, Rukiya grew to be deeply interested in the multiple layers of our environment and developed an appreciation for the inclusiveness of ecological, economical, and sociological components. Rukiya became passionate about the intersection of socioeconomic challenges, race inequalities, and environmental injustices. During her time at U of T she secured a student internship researching pro-environmental behaviours for Environment and Climate Change Canada's strategic policy department. Her research revealed that certain populations were less likely to adopt pro-environmental behaviour because of their socioeconomic status. This research fuelled Rukiya's desire to explore sustainable solutions for communities that are disadvantages and often ignored.
After graduation, Rukiya pursued a career with her Criminology & Socio-Legal background and came to the realization that sustainability was her true interest. Utilizing her Sociology and Environmental Science background. Rukiya hopes to promote sustainable communities that cater to diverse populations by working with communities, government, financial institutions and/or corporations. Most recently, Rukiya was working as an intern for Toronto Community Housing Corporation as part of their Community Revitalization team to support their commitment towards developing sustainable housing and sustainable communities through equitable infrastructure and program provision. Rukiya hopes to strength sustainability efforts catered to marginalized communities with her participation in the MScSM program. Rukiya hopes to widen her range by working with various industries open and willing to develop sustainable innovations for a sustainable future.
On her down time, Rukiya enjoys travelling and exploring different cultures and food. Rukiya cherishes time spent with family and friends, especially considering how hard of a task that has become with the pandemic. Doing yoga and reading a good book are some of Rukiya's self-care activities that keep her grounded.
