Bio

Seniyah Khan graduated from the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Pakistan, in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics. During her time at NUST, she took multidisciplinary courses ranging from Monetary Policy and Poverty & Income Distribution to Environmental and Development Economics. It was here that Seniyah developed an interest in how economic decisions at individual, corporate, and federal levels impact people and the environment. For her final year, Seniyah wrote her Honours thesis on understanding the drivers of consumer-based food waste in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. Her research focused on avoidable food waste occurring on consumers' plates in the hospitality sector. She examined the perceptions of consumers and hospitality managers, who observe plate-waste every day, to determine the factors influencing the decision to waste food.

Outside of her studies, Seniyah participated in various clubs and event management activities. Her most notable achievement was serving as the Vice President of the NUST Media Club, the university’s largest student-run organization. Her tenure as VP coincided with the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown. To ensure the continuity of the club in a virtual setting, Seniyah developed and launched an online talk show that featured industry specialists from diverse fields, including fashion, technology, and non-profit organizations, who shared their experiences and knowledge with the larger student body of NUST.

With global temperatures rising by the day, Seniyah realized the urgent need for sustainable economic practices and policies. This realization propelled her to pursue further education in sustainability, leading her to the University of Toronto, where she earned a Master of Science in Sustainability Management. Her academic journey has been marked by a commitment to understanding and addressing the intricate connections between economic activities and environmental impacts, driving her to become a champion for sustainable development. Her journey in the realm of sustainability is driven by her deep-seated commitment to addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our time: climate change mitigation and adaptation and circularity, particularly for plastics and packaging. Her passion for these areas led her to an impactful internship at the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA) as a Compliance and Registry Intern. During this internship, she honed her skills in regulatory compliance, data management, and stakeholder engagement, contributing to the enhancement of sustainable waste management practices.

Seniyah's dedication to sustainability extends beyond her professional endeavors. During her undergraduate studies, she demonstrated remarkable leadership and compassion by volunteering with her cohort to deliver workshops on Menstrual Health Management to all-girl public schools in underprivileged areas of Pakistan. This initiative was a significant step towards addressing the severe period poverty in the region, empowering young girls with knowledge and resources to manage their menstrual health with dignity and confidence.

In addition to her professional and volunteer work, Seniyah is an avid traveler, finding inspiration and joy in exploring new cultures and landscapes. Her favorite travel destinations include Uzbekistan, Turkey, and Sweden. These experiences have broadened her perspective and deepened her appreciation for the diverse ways in which sustainability can be pursued across the globe. Seniyah's creativity and love for art are reflected in her free-time activities, where she expresses herself through painting.
