The Final Blog Before I Say Bye to 2024—But First, Finals

The final blog before I say bye to 2024 - but first, finals

Well, this one is about to be longer, so bear with me!

I can’t believe it’s already time for the final blog of the semester! How’s everyone holding up? For me, it’s been a rollercoaster of late nights, group projects, and One Direction soundtracking my life. I’m still trying to wrap my head around how fast the past few months have flown by. But let’s not forget the fun stuff! UTM Skates was such a blast, and Puppy Yoga? I mean, does it get any better than the downward dog... with actual dogs? Those little fluffballs have to be the ultimate stress relief.

Now, though, it’s crunch time. Finals start next week, and the stress is very real. Juggling five courses has felt like running a marathon some days, but here are some of the things that have helped me stay grounded (remember, it’s all about finding what works for you!)…

For me, it starts with a to-do list. Breaking down my tasks into smaller, manageable pieces makes the mountain of work feel more like a series of little hills. Ticking off each item? Super satisfying. Once I’ve got my plan, it’s all about setting the vibe. The quiet study at Davis has become my go-to spot—it’s quiet, calm, and the perfect place to get into the zone. I grab a corner, lay out my notebooks, and get to work. But I don’t stop there. I make it cozy with my favourite playlist (yes, more One Direction and maybe some Tate McRae) and a little sweet treat from Tim’s—birthday cake Timbit or a hot chocolate muffin makes studying feel just a tiny bit indulgent.

But let’s be honest—there’s only so much focus one brain can manage before it starts to feel fried. That’s when I know it’s time for a break. Lately, I’ve been challenging myself to learn a new dance every day as a way to stay active and shake off the stress. It’s nothing too serious—just scrolling through TikTok or YouTube for something fun and giving it a go. It’s a quick escape from the study grind and gets my body moving in a way that doesn’t feel like “exercise.” Plus, it’s a great reminder that there’s still room for creativity and joy, even during finals.

Another thing that’s been keeping me grounded is going on walks with my friends. We bundle up against the cold—it’s a little chilly, but the fresh air makes it worth it. Sometimes, we just wander around campus or sit down to watch the sunset.
The best part? Our conversations. We talk about everything and nothing at the same time—things that make absolutely no sense but somehow lead to the most contagious laughter. Lately, we’ve been trying our luck at poetry. It’s less “literary masterpiece” and more “random sentences inspired by whatever we see,” but it’s hilarious and oddly satisfying. It’s silly, sure, but it’s also a perfect little escape that reminds me finals aren’t the only thing in life right now.

These moments—dancing, walking, or creating impromptu poetry—have become my lifeline during finals. They prove that even amidst the chaos, there’s room to pause, breathe, and just be.

And you know what? That’s the mindset I’m taking with me as we wrap up this semester and head toward winter break.

Because let’s not forget the light at the end of the tunnel: Winter break is almost here! Just thinking about going home makes me so happy. I’m already picturing cozy nights and holiday movies. And then there’s 2025…

The next time I write to you all, we’ll be in a new year. Everyone loves to say, “New year, new me,” but I’m trying to keep it real. Instead of reinventing myself, I plan to take everything I’ve learned this semester—the wins and the struggles—and grow from there. Let’s make it about progress, not perfection, right?

So here’s to the final stretch! Whether you’re knee-deep in study notes, planning your winter break, or just trying to survive the week, know you’re not alone. Take those breaks, move your body, and don’t forget to find moments of joy in the little things.

Catch you all in 2025! Let’s make it a good one. 🎉
