Walking through the doors of UTM this September, I felt a mix of anticipation and curiositywhat would this semester bring me? Who would I meet? How would I make this year count?

The first week is always a whirlwind of to-dos and introductions, from finalizing your course schedule to meeting your new professors and classmates. But this year, I knew I wanted to add something different to my routine. I knew that as soon as the endless cycle of midterms and assignments started, I would be glued to my seat. So, here are three things I have committed to this academic year to keep myself grooving and moving:

1. Joining the UTM Bollywood Club: Dancing to Bollywood beats is an incredible way to pump your heart and lift your spirits! When I first came upon the club, their energy was so infectious that, before I knew it, I was dancing with people who were strangers just moments before. It reminded me why I love dance so much—it unites people in a way that words can’t. Plus, it’s a fantastic workout! Speaking of which, I’m definitely considering checking out the RAWC’s Drop-In Zumba sessions. They sound like they’re right up my alley!

2. Swapping Books for Bats at a Cricket Drop-in: Stepping out of my comfort zone did not stop there. Not content with just the dancing, I decided to drop in for a game of cricket. Yes, cricket! I have always loved watching the game, but I have never actually swung a bat or bowled a ball before.

I will admit – It was super intimidating at first, but I had missed that feeling of finding my place among a group of friendly faces. Cricket, in particular, felt like a little slice of back home (India)! My first attempt at playing? Let’s say I did not quite hit a six, but I made several friends! It is easy to feel lost in the hustle of a new term, but these moments of connection reminded me that university is the perfect place to take risks and try new things!

3. Row, Smash, Repeat: Breaking a sweat at Drop-in and Move: The RAWC’s Drop-In & Move event was off the charts! There were so many fantastic activities, and I dove into the action. I gave Paddlesmash a go—I still have not quite gotten the hang of it, but there is always room for improvement, and it was incredibly fun! Rowing was equally epic; I felt the burn and got a real workout. And guess what? I even snagged a swag bag for my efforts! It was a day full of new adventures and pure excitement.

So, if you are like me- anxious, excited, and looking to find your footing this semester- my advice is to put yourself out there! Join that club you have been eyeing, or drop in for a random sports game! You never know where it might lead!
