International Students

The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) has made changes to how international students receive their health card. Students are now able to access their cards online. Details about this new process are available on the International Education Centre UHIP webpage.

All International students at UTM are required to have UHIP coverage. You must show your UHIP card at each visit.

Being seen off campus

If you are seen at a clinic off-campus you will be expected to pay for your visit. At the end of your visit, the doctor who saw you will need to fill out a UHIP formYou will be able to claim the money back from the insurance company.

You must remember to take a copy of your UHIP form every time you are seen off campus.

What is UHIP? And who gets it?

University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is an insurance plan for international students and offers comparable coverage to OHIP or other Canadian provincial health care plans. Enrolment in UHIP is compulsory for international students because it provides the coverage needed to pay for (or be reimbursed for) health care services and medical treatments.

Where do I get my UHIP card?

UHIP cards are available online.  Follow the step-by-step instructions.

What does UHIP cover?

UHIP covers visits to doctors, medical specialists and hospital stays. It also covers laboratory (blood work, etc) and diagnostics charges (X-ray’s & Ultrasounds). For complete details, please see UHIP coverage details.

What is not covered by UHIP?

UHIP does not cover prescription drugs, eyeglasses, dental surgery, or immunizations. Some of these services are covered by the extended health care plan offered through your student union. For more information about that plan visit the UTMSU website or speak with your student union.

How does UHIP work?

The process for using your UHIP coverage varies by location.

On campus:

  • UTM's Health & Counselling Centre – It is most convenient for students to use the services at the UTM Health & Counselling Centre, and you are encouraged to call 905-828-5255 or visit DV 1152 ahead of time to make an appointment. You must bring your UHIP card with you to your appointment. If you do not have your UHIP card, you must pay for your appointment up-front.

Off campus at a Preferred Provider Network location (PPN):

  • You must bring your UHIP card and a claim form with you. The PPN location will directly bill the insurance provider. One of the nearby PPN locations is Credit Valley Hospital. For a list of other PPN locations, please visit the UHIP website.

Off campus at all other clinics of hospitals (non-PPN locations)

  • You must bring your UHIP card and a claim form with you. You will have to pay the clinic or hospital up-front and then submit the completed claim form to Cowan Group.

Where do I get a claim form?

A claim form can be found on the UHIP Forms page. You can also pick-up claim forms at the Health & Counselling Centre (DV 1152).

How do I submit a claim form?

During your off-campus visit to a clinic or hospital, complete sections 1, 2 & 3 and have the doctor complete sections 4 & 5 of the claim form. Mail your completed claim form, including all the original receipts, to the Cowan Group at the address indicated on the claim form.  Remember to keep photocopies of the submitted documents for your own records.

What if I still have questions?
