Counselling
The HCC provides a variety of approaches to support student mental health in the way that works best for each individual student. We strive to personalize by providing individual wellness plans for students wanting to address their mental well-being.
Our clinicians offer short-term, solution-focused counselling and therapy services, which can be accessed same day or scheduled in advance. HCC staff can also provide recommendations to assist students in accessing resources in the community when complex and/or long-term care is needed.
There are many reasons why someone might choose to access counselling services including:
- Body image
- Eating disorders
- Self-esteem
- Coming out
- Transitioning
- Family conflict
- Relationships
- Emotional or social concerns
- Depression
- Apathy
- Exam anxiety

Our mental health supports us in being able to do the things we want or need to do. Our mental health provides us with the capacity to build skills to manage life’s challenges.
It is normal to experience brief periods of sadness, hopelessness, isolation, and anxiety under certain circumstances (such as during exams or with a loss of a loved one). When struggling with such issues for prolonged periods of time it may be detrimental to your physical and psychological well-being and can be related to a mental illness.
Unlike physical illnesses that often present with visual signs and symptoms, mental illness can be elusive and difficult to recognize. Although each illness is manifested in its own way, here are some general signs and symptoms that are often associated with mental illness:
- Changes in eating and/or sleeping habits
- Lack of interest in daily activities
- Social withdrawal
- Unpredictable or extreme changes in mood
- Abuse of alcohol and/or drugs
- Long periods of sadness, anger, anxiety, irritability or agitation
- Persistent physical pain
- Thoughts of suicide
If you are concerned about yourself or a friend that may have some of these signs and symptoms, we encourage you to call the Health & Counselling Centre at 905-828-5255 or drop by the clinic (DV 1152) to speak to a personal counsellor, nurse or doctor.
