Research Interests and Ongoing Projects

Dr. Avery’s research explores transitions associated with the period of adolescence in the Roman Empire, including patterns of puberty and social transitions (when boys and girls started to act, or be treated, like adults). Her work takes a biocultural approach and incorporates Childhood Social Theory to investigate life course changes within their appropriate context. In this research, Creighton incorporates morphological and biochemical methods, including dietary stable isotopes and peptide analysis of amelogenin in tooth enamel.

Beyond academia, Dr. Avery is employed as an osteoarchaeologist in cultural resource management, identifying human remains in archaeological contexts in Southwestern Ontario.
