Inkbox: The Chemistry, Growth, and Future of Semi-Permanent Tattoos

Friday, March 28, 2025 | 11 a.m.-12 p.m. | HSC Boardroom (located within HSC 330)*

This talk will explore the chemistry and history of Inkbox, the Toronto-based start-up that pioneered semi-permanent tattoos and was acquired by BIC in 2022. It will highlight the role of research partnerships in Inkbox’s success and discuss potential future directions. The session aims to spark a brainstorming discussion on new research collaborations for those interested.

Meet our speaker: Christopher Caputo, Chief Science Officer, Skin Compatible Technology, BIC

Dr. Christopher Caputo is an Associate Professor and Tier II Canada Research Chair in the Department of Chemistry at York University. He earned his Honours BSc from the University of Windsor and his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Toronto. He further advanced his research as an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University. Outside academia, Dr. Caputo has made significant strides in industry; he was the Director of Research and Development at the Toronto-based startup, Inkbox, which pioneered semi-permanent tattoo technology and was acquired by BIC in 2022. Following the acquisition, he now serves as the Chief Science Officer for Skin Compatible Technology at BIC. Dr. Caputo’s diverse experiences have shaped his research group’s interests, which focus on both fundamental main-group chemistry and the entrepreneurial application of chemical discoveries for commercialization.

Building Connections: Finding Research Partners

Meet our speakers: Matthew Parreira, OCIP, eCampus Ontario; Eden Wallace, Halo Science; Modupe Olufemi, Mitacs

This first session of a two-part mini-series will focus on strategies for identifying and establishing successful research collaborations. Attendees will learn about University resources and external platforms designed to foster collaborations across disciplines and sectors, helping to initiate and strengthen connections that support innovative and impactful research. Open to faculty, staff, and students interested in developing research partnerships.
