Current Opportunities
Candidates from the UTM research community are being sought for the following award opportunities:
The purpose of the McLean Endowment is to support outstanding basic research at the University of Toronto in the following fields: engineering sciences, physics, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and the theory and methods of statistics.
One McLean Award will be made annually in the amount of $150,000.
Deadline: December 2, 2024
The Royal Society of Canada's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists enables the participation of early- and mid-career faculty in the activities of the Royal Society of Canada. Members of the College are Canadians and Permanent Residents who, at an early stage in their career, have demonstrated a high level of achievement. The criterion for nomination is excellence, and membership is for seven years.
Candidates must be no more than 15 years from the conferral of the PhD or equivalent qualification.

The RSC serves Canada and Canadians by recognizing these leaders in research and innovation and mobilizing them in open discussion and debate about complex and timely issues in the headlines or on the horizon. Their integrated interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding is a valuable national resource. This is a lifetime recognition. The RSC consists of Fellows elected in three Academies (Academy I, Arts and Humanities; Academy II, Social Sciences; and Academy III, Science).
Fellows are those with exceptional and original publications, intellectual achievements, and creative activities. Their achievements are in the arts, the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences. They are either Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada for at least three years at the time of their nomination.

The RSC serves Canada and Canadians by recognizing these leaders in research and innovation. The RSC administers prestigious awards in recognition of outstanding achievement.
- Henry Marshall Tory Medal - For outstanding research in any branch of astronomy, chemistry,mathematics, physics, or an allied science.
- Jason A. Hannah Medal - For an important publication in the history of medicine.
- John L. Synge Award - For outstanding research in any of the branches of the mathematical sciences.
- McLaughlin Medal - For important research of sustained excellence in any branch of medical sciences.
- Michael P. Païdoussis Medal - For outstanding contributions to research, education and leadership in applied mechanics. Solid continuum mechanics, fluid mechanics and fluid-structure interaction are all included.
- Miroslaw Romanowski Medal - For scientific work relating to environmental problems.
- Pierre Chauveau Medal - For a distinguished contribution to knowledge in the humanities.
- Rutherford Memorial Medals - For outstanding research in physics and in chemistry.
- Sir John William Dawson Medal - For important contributions of knowledge in multiple domains.
- Yvan Allaire Medal - For outstanding contributions in governance of public and private organizations.

OVPRI Awards & Honours Support
Award Coordination
OVPRI is happy to support the coordination of award nominations for UTM faculty. This includes internal and external awards, tri-agency and discipline specific awards. We rely on departmental involvement to help identify qualified individuals and/or disciplinary level awards. If you are interested in awards, please speak to your Chair or reach out to us directly (Self-Nomination Form) for more information.
Award Information and Benchmarking
OVPRI award tip sheets and guidelines (available in Resources) will be circulated to department Chairs and available on our website approximately four months prior to an award deadline. OVPRI will, upon request, support nominations by benchmarking potential nominees to recent award winners and by providing career trajectory advice and logical award ladders.
Equitable and Transparent Selection Processes
OVPRI is committed to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion and maintaining a supportive and inclusive culture surrounding award nominations. We will support all qualified individuals for award nominations and provide unbiased and high-quality support to all UTM candidates. If you are interested in a particular award, you can self-nominate on our website, and we will work with you to help find a suitable nominator, if required. In addition, if you have any feedback on how to make our process more equitable or inclusive, please contact us.
Divisional Review Process
The divisional review process is designed to support and provide feedback for individuals being nominated for selected major awards. The process is designed and managed by OVPRI and generally includes editorial review of the draft nomination material and help with identifying strong referees. We are also happy to offer support to any UTM candidates for disciplinary level or other awards on an ad hoc basis.
Recognition & Celebration
OVPRI strives to recognize and celebrate outstanding UTM faculty members who have obtained honours, awards and distinctions to encourage a positive award culture at UTM. Recent award winners will be featured on our UTM Awards Winners page and promoted through social media and UTM communications.
