Kathi Wilson, Vice-Dean, Faculty and professor in the department of Geography, Geomatics and Environment at the University of Toronto Mississauga, has won the Melinda S. Meade Distinguished Scholarship Award

Awarded annually by the Health and Medical Geography Specialty Group (HMGSC) of the American Association of Geographers (AAG), the international Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of health and medical geography research.

“To see my name included in the list of previous award recipients whose work was critical in establishing the discipline of Health Geography is incredibly rewarding,” says Wilson. "Over the past two decades I have had the privilege to collaborate with interdisciplinary scholars, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students, and a supportive network of community partners in Peel Region, all of whom made this achievement possible.”

Wilson’s research focuses on the role of urban environment in shaping social determinants of health and health outcomes among immigrant and Indigenous populations.

She is currently researching the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on immigrant and racialized populations in Peel Region, in collaboration with U of T faculty from several disciplines and partners at Peel Public Health, Trillium Health Partners, and the Newcomer Centre of Peel. The Peel COVID-19 Experiences project aims to ensure that resident-informed programming and initiatives are developed in the future.
