House Checks & Cleaning Tips

About House Checks

After moving in, your Don will be conducting a monthly house check to ensure that your unit meets our cleaning standards. We want you to be successful, so please feel free to use the cleaning information provided below throughout the year, as well as during the move-out period. Failure to meet our standards may result in financial charges and/or disciplinary measures. If you have any questions, please get in touch with your Don.

Safety & Helpful Tips

Remember not to mix store-bought cleaning products together - Mixing products can create toxic gas and cause harm.

Using the wrong cleaner on a delicate surface - Many of today's counter-tops, floors, and appliances require specialty cleaners (granite, stainless steel, some of the new composite materials). Even plain old soap and water is a problem on some surfaces. When in doubt, ask!

Abrasive cleaners or scrubbers - There are plenty products specially designed for heavy duty tasks. Use of abrasive cleaners (e.g. powder cleaners) and metal scouring pads will only damage the surfaces leading to future maintenance and cleaning problems.

Vacuums and Swiffers are available at the Residence Services Desk in Oscar Peterson Hall - You can sign out a vacuum, Swiffer, or other cleaning supplies during regular business hours.

Areas commonly missed during cleaning - Make sure you don't miss these spots!

  • Drip trays located underneath stove elements
  • Floor underneath appliances
  • Vents/fans – wipe down with a cloth
  • Walls - Magic Eraser and a bit of water works wonders to clean marks/scuffs off walls.
