You’ll have the freedom to choose the items you’d like to eat from a variety of locations across campus allowing you to be able to fully utilize your plan by deciding how and when to you use your plan as it suits you.

Balances can be topped up during the academic year using E Accounts.

Your meal plan can be used across campus

All plans come with Basic & Flex dollars

Make it Basic!

MAKE IT BASIC!

What does it mean?

We want you to know the difference between Basic dollars and Flex dollars so that you may efficiently spend your Student Meal Plan funds.

Our goal is to help you understand how to spend your Basic dollars.

Why you should care about spending your Basic dollars:

  1. So you don't run out of Flex dollars too soon
  2. So you don't end the year with too many Basic dollars to carry over
  3. So you may save up to 13% on your purchases (save the tax!)
    • Did you know you pay tax on Flex items, but not on Basic purchases?

How do I Make it Basic?

  • Don't just buy a drink
  • Don't just buy a confectionary item

Add an entrée to your purchase it turns your purchase into a meal.

When you buy a meal you Make it Basic!

Essentially, if you add the central part of a meal. Think... the hot part, the big part, and main part -

  • a salad (including both fresh and pre-made)
  • a burger
  • a sandwich (including both fresh and pre-made)
  • a hot dish (including both fresh and warmed up)
  • ...anything else you would enjoy as an entrée

This qualifies as a Basic purchase.

Breakfast example

  • A tea and an omelet

Great, because you have an entrée (eggs) - you made it Basic!

Lunch example

  • A sparkling water, a sandwich, and a cookie

Great, because you have an entrée (a sandwich) - you made it Basic!

Dinner example

  • A pop, pasta dish, and a slice of cake

Great, because you have an entrée (a pasta dish) - you made it Basic!

Confectionary Item example

  • A bag of chips or a bag of candy from the Candy Shop

Sorry - because you don't have an entrée as part of this order, it is not Basic.

Add a pre-made sandwich from the Bodega fridge though, and you've just made it Basic!

How do Student Meal Plans work?

A Student Meal Plan is a Declining Balance, À La Carte style meal plan. This means that you pay for what you want, when you want

Whenever you make a food or beverage purchase, the purchase value comes off of your Student Meal Plan balance (Declining Balance). If you want to purchase an entire breakfast meal, or if you just want a coffee and a muffin in the morning, or even if you don't want to eat anything until late afternoon, then you are free to do so. You can skip breakfast or eat 3 burgers for dinner - your Student Meal Plan does not dictate your eating habits, you do.  This is because you can purchase as much or as little as you want any time during the day (à la carte).

What does each Student Meal Plan include?

  • We have a meal plan type called a “Declining Balance” meal plan
  • This means that you start with a total amount of money in your account, and as you spend it, it declines from your account
    • It does not matter if you only eat two meals a day, or if you eat five meals a day, because it only removes money from your account when you purchase food
    • You do not lose money for not eating breakfast; you only spend money when you purchase food
  • You can buy food anywhere on campus, and at our off campus partners
  • Student Meal Plans also “include” up to a 13% savings on all “Basic” purchases (save the tax)

Benefits of a Student Meal Plan

  • "Basic" dollar purchases allow you a tax savings of up to 13% off of qualifying purchases
  • You can use the online Budget Planner to see how your spending compares in order to adjust your spending. Once you see how you are spending, you may move to a smaller plan (within one month after first-year move-in; see Important Dates and Deadlines for details) or you may add more money to your account as required
  • The funds are deposited directly on your TCard and can be used whenever you need to make a food or beverage purchase, just tap and go!
  • You can use your student meal plan funds at all food service locations on campus, as well as with our off-campus partners

What is the difference between all of the Student Meal Plans?

  • Each Student Meal Plan has a different monetary value so that you are able to purchase a plan that reflects how often you will be eating on campus and the size of your appetite
    • As a guide, consider the below:
      • If you will be on campus through the week, and on weekends, you will want a larger plan
      • If you plan to leave campus on the weekends, you will need a smaller plan
      • If you have a large appetite, you will need a larger plan
      • If you have a smaller appetite, you will need a smaller plan

What does the "Minimum Commitment" refer to?

The "Minimum Commitment" is the minimum level of Basic Dollar spending required.

Basic Dollars remaining at the end of the school year over this minimum level of spending are eligible to carry over into the following year.

What if I change my mind about which plan I want?

If you choose a plan then change your mind, you may change your plan. Please note there is a deadline for this. Visit the Important Dates & Deadlines page for the deadline.
