Work Search Strategies

Access the Hidden Job Market

While you should apply to posted jobs with tailored resumes and cover letters, experts agree that many jobs are not posted. You need to access this hidden job market. Learn to network and build relationships with professionals while you are here at UTM by attending a variety of events. Start by attending a Learn to Network workshop or talking to an Employment Strategist.

Know What You Are Looking For

Before even starting your job search, you need to understand your skills and interests and know what type of work you are looking for. One of the keys to a successful job search is knowing what makes you a unique candidate and communicating this effectively to a prospective employer. For help with self-assessment, you can make an appointment to see a Career Counsellor. With help on your resume and cover letter, you may consult our online resources, attend a workshop and book a critique. Come to our Effective Interviews Workshop and practice your interview skills in a mock interview appointment.

Be Proactive and Have a Plan

Researching employers, figuring out how to make contact with them, and preparing yourself can seem daunting.

If you need help searching for a job, you may book an appointment with an Employment Strategist to address your concerns and gain support in your job search efforts. You may also consider attending the Finding Internships and Summer Jobs workshop.
