The Institute for Management & Innovation is home to graduate students in six professional Master's degree programs, as well as an undergraduate minor and an undergraduate certificate of completion. We also offer executive education programming at IMIx for lifelong learners, and engage teams of students in entrepreneurship at the ICUBE.
Here, students are taught to think in new ways and provided with incredible opportunities to engage with people and problems both locally and globally.
Our students are smart, agile, open-minded, compassionate, creative and bold in their thinking. They are authentic, ethical, dedicated, and optimistic. Read on below to learn more about how students learn, engage and inspire at IMI.
Graduate Students at IMI
Graduate students at IMI are supported and engaged in many ways. Read on below to learn more about what it's like to be a student at IMI, and what resources are in place to support you.
Graduate student life at IMI is rich, with a full academic experience and many options to engage in social connection, experiential learning and extra curricular activities. Each Program has it's own distinct culture, connection and community, and the Programs come together at IMI to bridge topics, thinking and approaches.
IMI is a welcoming place to study, built on inclusivity and diversity of people, thought and experience. Students develop close relationships with their Faculty, who are among the best in the world, and their Staff, who are a dedicated group of thoughtful, compassionate administrators who are there to help you along the way.
You'll find ample opportunity to connect with your peers, through events hosted by the Graduate Student Committee, by getting involved with IMIRS (our student journal), or by participating in campus extra curriculars.
At IMI, you’ll be supported by a caring and dedicated team of faculty members and staff who are here to support your life learning and give you the soft skills you’ll need as you pursue your ambitions. IMI values student health, wellness, compassionate well-being and recognizes that you bring your whole self to IMI when you join our community. As a result, IMI offers dedicated resources, including an Embedded Wellness Counsellor for IMI graduate students (in partnership with the HCC), and an open-door policy. This means that your Program Staff are there to support you with anything you may need, and the IMI Staff are also available at any time to meet with you and help you to find the resources you are looking for. IMI is also closely connected with support offices across the campus, including Accessibility Services, the Anti-Racism and Cultural Diversity Office, the Health and Counselling Centre, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office, the Academic Skills Centre, the School of Graduate Studies, and more.

The IMI Programs offer advanced experiential learning throughout the course of each degree. More than just a co-op, we create opportunities for you to collaborate with your peers, professors, researchers and partners across multiple disciplines.
Each Program incorporates at least one, paid full-time co-op term with full support from dedicated Placement Managers along the way. Some Programs also offer Capstone projects, where you work in groups with employers on real strategic challenges, as well as live case competitions, in which you tackle live business cases. Many Programs offer field trips, field learning and hands-on exploration in the lab or in the community.
In addition, every Program offers a full suite of professional development programming. This means that when you graduate, you graduate with theory, practical experience, and real-world skills that employers are asking for. To learn more about what each Program offers, visit our Graduate Programs page.
While you're studying at IMI, you'll have opportunities to engage in case competitions and conferences if you would like to. IMI's BIGDataAIHUB hosts an annual Case Competition relating to big data and artificial intelligence open to all graduate students. Most Programs have an internal case competition as well, providing real-world experiences on a live case with an industry partner. As part of U of T, IMI students can also compete in a range of other competitions hosted in other units, like the RBC x Rotman Sustainable Finance Case Competition, which has been won by IMI MScSM students in the past.
Students can also access Conferences both locally and globally. Some Programs offer financial support for Conferences, and student can access the SGS Conference Grant.
The IMI Student Council (IMISC; formerly IMI GSC) is comprised of students from six grad programs at IMI. These student leaders come together to create programming for their peers that is fun, educational, and inspiring. Creating social events and professional development events alike, the team brings the programs together in experience.
Learn more about ways to get involved with the IMISC or join their events here.
IMIRS - the IMI Review by Students - is a student-run publication that highlights student work to the larger community. Run by an executive team of students from the various Programs, IMIRS is published once a year. Here, you have an opportunity to write articles including research pieces, op-eds, short stories or other pieces. You can also contribute as an editor, or graphic designer.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to meaningfully participate in Sustainability Week, work with youth in the community through Let’s Talk Sustainability, as well as connect with global thought leaders in sustainability by supporting the Sustainability: Transdisciplinary Theory, Practice, and Action conference which occurs in the fall.
