In an effort to reduce its carbon footprint and mitigate the impact of air travel emissions, the University of Toronto has launched the Air Travel Emissions Mitigation Initiative (ATEMI).
ATEMI is a mandatory institutional carbon offsetting program for all U of T funded air travel.
While staff, faculty, and librarians are highly encouraged to avoid air travel where possible by considering alternatives, such as virtual meetings, some flying may still be needed to maintain U of T's international presence as a leader in post-secondary education.
Program Structure
- As of March 15, 2023, all unavoidable air travel is subject to a carbon offset fee (per person) for every kilometre traveled.
- The collected carbon fees are then pooled into a fund that supports various tri-campus projects to reduce university-related carbon emissions.
