UTM’s Sustainability Vision
UTM aims to foster the culture of sustainability necessary to become a world leader in sustainable practice. Our vision of sustainability, as articulated by the Sustainability Pathways Working Group (SPWG), rests on the principle that the biosphere is the foundation for all human activities: the well-being of present and future generations depends on the health of our shared ecosystems. We seek to create a culture that respects the earth and all of its inhabitants. Influenced by the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), our commitment also encompasses the 17 United Nations SDGs.
The Sustainability Strategic Plan (2020), comprised of 26 goals aligned with the UN SDGs and STARS, is UTM’s campus-wide roadmap for implementing sustainability initiatives. From consulting with staff, faculty, students, and alumni, the following five pillars emerged:

Our Progress
As indicated in the Sustainability Strategic Plan, an annual report will be written at the end of each fiscal year (April 30th) to commemorate achievements, provide status updates, and highlight lessons learned. Check out the annual Progress Reports below:
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
Adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, the 17 UN SDGs provide a framework for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.
The SDGs @ UofT initiative was created as an Institutional Strategic Initiative (ISI) to catalyze research on sustainable development at the University.
