Indigenous Curriculum and Pedagogy

A steel kettle sits atop a low-burning fire, releasing a cloud of steam and smoke into the air.

The Indigenous Curriculum and Pedagogy portfolio at the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre (RGASC) supports UTM’s commitment to embedding Indigenous Knowledge Systems within its teaching, research, and institutional practices.

Services for Faculty and Instructors

The Special Projects Officer, Indigenous Curriculum and Pedagogies, provides the following services for faculty and instructors:

  • Curriculum and Program Development: Support for embedding Indigenous Knowledge Systems into course content, program design, and instructional practices, aligning with institutional commitments to reconciliation.

  • Consultation: Guidance on decolonizing teaching practices, fostering cultural safety, and integrating Indigenous ways of knowing into pedagogy, research, and assessment.

  • Workshops: Tailored workshops on Indigenous pedagogies and research methods as well as other topics specific to the needs and priorities of faculty and instructors.

  • Research: Support for research projects that prioritize Indigenous methodologies and reciprocal collaboration with Indigenous communities.

We are also building a database of resources to share with the UTM community. These resources, guides, and multimedia tools will support faculty and instructors to embed Indigenous perspectives into their teaching practices.

Our Approach

The Indigenous Curriculum and Pedagogies portfolio at the RGASC is guided by the Calls to Action outlined in Wecheehetowin and a commitment to advancing reconciliation through education. Our work emphasizes the development of meaningful relationships, advancing curricular transformation, and promoting culturally safe and inclusive practices across the university.
