Lachlan's research focuses on the relationship between early human groups in the Southern Levant as they responded to changing climatic conditions and the role this played in facilitating major transitions in early prehistory. In particular, he is interested in the evolution of the human environment relationship as seen through the phytolith record as groups became sedentary and domesticated plants and animals.

His project focuses on a chronology of plant use within the Southern Levant, documenting plant use and resource selection from the beginnings of sedentism up until the origins of agriculture, covering a time period from 15 kya - 8.5 kya. By examining how climate change influenced local human plant interactions and the ways in which early human settlements mitigated risk through a reliance on local environmental ecozones, specifically wetlands, his work aims to not only provide insights into resiliency and adaption in the face of climatic uncertainties facing future generations but improve upon best practices for sustainable agriculture today.
