And so, another new academic year has begun! Welcome to all of our new and returning students!

Welcome, also, to Prof. Mai Ha Vu, who joined our department this past July! Mai Ha brings additional expertise on computational linguistics.

We are also happy to welcome SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. Eszter Ótott-Kovács, who will be working on embedded clauses in Turkic and other languages under the supervision of Prof. Arsalan Kahnemuyipour.

Orientation, Meet & Greets, and Program Information Sessions

We were happy to meet all of the first-year students who dropped by our department's booth at Orientation 2024 on September 7. We look forward to seeing you in our courses!

Thank you also to everyone who joined us for our departmental meet & greet and program information sessions! It was nice to see new and familiar faces out on the patio outside our department.

September also marked the beginning of our new Linguists at Work series. Over twenty students attended the first session to learn more about how to get into speech language pathology. The series continues with a session on grad school for linguistics in October.

In our Courses

This month, students in ITA307H5 (Italian Novels on the Big Screen), taught by Dr. Paola Bernardini, had the opportunity to meet with Italian director and producer, Leonardo Guerra Seràgnoli, who was in town to attend the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The director shared some of the cinematic techniques he employed in his 2020 adaption of the novel, The Time of Difference, and was also on hand for a Q & A session.

Special Events

We had the privilege of hosting two Chinese cultural events this month. On Wednesday, September 18, we celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival with mooncakes, singing, and an arrow-throwing game.

On Tuesday, September 24, we welcomed Jenna Tang, translator of Lin Yi-Han's novel, Fang Si-Chi's First Love Paradise. Jenna shared about the artistry in capturing the nuances of literary devices when translating from Chinese to English.

Thank you to Dr. Xinliang Jiang, Dr. Xiaohui Ren, and Dr. Jing Li for organizing these events!
