International Education Week Event Spotlight: Toronto's Unique Style of English (Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024)

IEW Event Poster

Did you know that the “Toronto accent” has influences from Caribbean, South Asian, East Asian, and Middle Eastern cultures?

The Greater Toronto Area is one of the most multicultural and multilingual cities in the world. In a city where more than 50% of us have a first language other than English, Professor Derek Denis has been asking, how do these many other languages affect Toronto English? In this talk, he'll review a few of the vocabulary and accent features of what he calls 'Multicultural Toronto English' and consider the perceptions and attitudes toward this way of speaking.

Join us on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024 from 12-1pm in MN 5128.

Lunch will be provided.

You can register for the event in advance.

This event is part of the International Education Centre's International Education Week Spotlights.
