UTM is ‘home’ to 1200+ graduate students pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees. Broadly speaking, graduate students on our campus can be categorized into three main groups: tri-campus research stream master’s and doctoral students, professional stream master’s students from the Institute of Management and Innovation (IMI), and master’s students from the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. While similar in many ways, these three distinct groups of graduate students have a unique identity and connection to the UTM campus, depending on their campus affiliation, supervisory arrangements, and geographic location.
The Tri-Campus Network
While the different campuses of the University of Toronto have separate undergraduate programs, research-stream graduate programs for many disciplines are shared across all three campuses, with faculty from all campuses fully participating.
For example, UTM’s undergraduate Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences is home to many faculty members whose laboratories are on the Mississauga campus but whose administrative graduate home is located downtown Toronto in the departments of Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Physics, and most recently, Astronomy. CPS faculty supervise graduate students from all four of these graduate units. In turn, these students have two academic "homes" — their graduate unit (e.g., the graduate Department of Chemistry) and the undergraduate unit at UTM that houses them while at UTM (i.e., the Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences).
Similarly, UTM’s undergraduate Department of Historical Studies houses faculty members with graduate appointments in units such as the Department of History, the Department of Religion, and the Women and Gender Studies Institute, all administered centrally on the St. George campus. Many students from these respective graduate departments conduct their research and training at UTM and choose to affiliate with the Mississauga campus.
UTM faculty thus supervise graduate students from a variety of faculties, including the Faculty of Arts & Science, the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Information, the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and others. As a result, research-stream graduate students constitute the largest group of graduate students at UTM, with over 650 master's and doctoral students from graduate programs across the University.
Research-stream students who are supervised or co-supervised by UTM faculty have the option to change their affiliation from the University of Toronto St. George campus, which serves as the administrative center of their graduate unit, to the UTM campus. In the 2023-24 academic year, over 60% of research-stream graduate students were affiliated with UTM. This flexibility allows students to align their research and academic activities with their supervisors and the resources available at UTM.
Professional Stream Masters Students from the Institute of Management and Innovation
The Institute of Management and Innovation (IMI) is UTM’s flagship graduate unit, offering seven distinct graduate degree programs to approximately 450 professional master's students, all of whom are exclusively affiliated with the Mississauga campus.
While most IMI programs are course-based and have strong industry connections, the Master of Sustainability Management program requires the completion of a research paper, which may be original or based on existing work. Consequently, some IMI students go on to publish or present their research at conferences.
Professional Master’s Students from Temerty Faculty of Medicine
The University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine offers two professional stream master’s programs at the University of Toronto Mississauga: Biomedical Communications and Occupational Therapy. Students from both programs are affiliated with the UTM campus.
