Outdoor Uneven Surface Inspection and Maintenance Guidelines
Facilities Management & Planning
Purpose
The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) through the Facilities Management and Planning (FMP) department is committed to minimizing trip hazards as a result of uneven surfaces on outdoor asphalt, concrete and other solid materials on the UTM campus.
The purpose of this guideline is intended to:
- Identify the frequency of inspections and the maintenance procedures performed by FMP, and
- Provide reporting tools to the UTM community for potential hazards.
Inspection Roles & Responsibilities
FMP in collaboration with UTM Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) department will perform bi-annual inspections of outdoor asphalt, concrete and other solid material surfaces on the UTM campus to identify potential tripping hazards as a result of uneven surfaces.
Tripping hazards identified during inspections will be repaired in order of severity within one (1) week. Any hazards that cannot be repaired within the one week timeframe, due to complexity, waiting on material or contract, etc., will be identified with paint and/or pylons to alert community members.
All staff are required to complete the online EHS528 Slips, Trips and Falls course. For detailed instructions on how to register and access the training, please refer to the EHS Registration Guide.
Community Reporting
University librarians, faculty and staff are encouraged to report any potential trip hazards via ServiceNow (https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/facilities/work-orders) which requires UTORid authentication.
All other students and community members are encouraged to report potential trip hazards to Campus Safety via telephone at (905) 828-5200 or FMP via email at fmp.utm@utoronto.ca.
Reported trip hazards will be assessed and repaired, as necessary, within three (3) business days.
