First Aid Stations
There are a number of first aid stations on campus with trained first aiders as part of the University’s First Aid Program that are centrally maintained by Environmental Health & Safety (EHS). Each station is clearly marked with signage and stocked with first aid supplies. A list of the first aid station locations and their assigned first aiders can be found on the EHS website. Some departments manage additional first aid resources which are not included in the list.
Identified First Aiders
If you would like to volunteer to become a First Aider for the campus, please contact Wei-Ting Shek, UTM EHS Manager, at weiting.shek@utoronto.ca for upcoming training opportunities. All First Aiders must be trained and certified in Standard First Aid and assigned to a First Aid Station in their area. Training is provided by a WSIB-approved training provider and is offered as a comprehensive two-day in-person course. After successful completion of the training, individuals will receive a certificate which is valid for 3 years.
Erindale College Special Response Team (ECSpeRT)
The Erindale College Special Response Team (ECSpeRT) is a division of St. John Ambulance located at UTM. ECSpeRT is a team of student volunteers with advanced Medical First Responder training that provides fast and effective first aid to all students, staff and visitors of the UTM Campus. ECSpeRT is only on duty during the academic year from 8 AM Monday to 8 AM Saturday. Individuals who require medical assistance can call ECSpeRT directly at 905-569-4925 or call Campus Safety at 905-569-4333.
Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)
AEDs are an important life-saving device in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. UTM has over 70 AED units located throughout the campus. All of the AEDs are registered with Peel Paramedic’s Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) program and regularly maintained to ensure proper operation in case of an emergency. A map of the AEDs on campus can be found at: https://ecspert.ca/aeds/. To view how to utilize the AED units on campus, watch this video created by ECSpeRT.
Naloxone
Naloxone is a drug that can be used to quickly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose (also referred to as opioid poisoning). Campus Safety is equipped and trained on the use of naloxone kits. For more information on Naloxone, including reporting a risk of opioid overdose by a worker or student, refer to the EHS Naloxone page.
