Lived Experiences

Objective 

  1. To understand your story and journey during the pandemic
  2. To understand how communities, organizations, and health agencies respond to the pandemic
  3. To support the development of resident-informed programming and initiatives 

Methods 

  1. Conversational interviews with Peel Region residents 
    1. Lasting 45 min- 1.5 hrs., via Zoom or phone calls
    2. A diverse team of research assistants, with multiple language capabilities
  2. Mapping case rates and vaccine coverage using Peel Region data and statistics
  3. Interviews with community organizations and healthcare agencies

Recruitment

Who participated:

  • Age 18 years old and older
  • Living in Peel Region (Brampton, Caledon, Mississauga)
  • Immigrant AND/OR a racialized person

We created recruitment posters in 7 languages: English, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi Shahmukhi, Punjabi Gurmukhi, Urdu, and Vietnamese

Current Project Updates

More than 80 people came forward to be interviewed about their experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic. A team of UTM social scientists is now analyzing the results of those interviews.

Next Steps

The findings of the project are being shared and validated with community partners and agencies to inform health messaging and social care programs within Peel Region and in other peer health regions (e.g., York, Fraser, and Richmond) with comparable profiles.
