We're excited to announce that Prof. Derek Denis has been awarded the Canadian Linguistic Association's Early Career Researcher Award!
Derek shares this honour with Prof. Lyn Tieu (Department of French, University of Toronto), who was also a recipient of the award this year, as this year's selection process resulted in a tie.
In outlining some of Derek's outstanding contributions to the field of linguistics, the Canadian Linguistic Association noted Derek's work on language variation and change, and in particular, his Multicultural Toronto English (MTE) project, which documents and analyzes the multiethnolects of Toronto. In addition to Derek's numerous publications in research journals, Derek has also contributed to discussions on linguistic prejudice and bias, as well as other important linguistic issues, in the general media.
Congratulations, Derek!
Prof. Ai Taniguchi and her research are featured in this spring's edition of University of Toronto Magazine. Read or listen to the article and learn more about Ai's journey and how her experiences have shaped the trajectory of her research interests; particularly in the areas of communicating linguistics to various audiences, and making research accessible.
Ai has used her artistic talent to create a collection of comics which highlight the stories and experiences of some of UTM's multilingual students as part of her L'IMAGE Project. Each story then segues into a brief linguistic analysis of each of the languages spoken by the students. Ai's comics have been on display on campus as part of the Jackman Humanities Seminar Series on Multilingualism, as well as for International Education Week.
This summer, Ai will be leading a group of undergraduate research fellows who will work with her to research best practices in communicating linguistics, while using comics to present their findings as part of the Jackman Humanities Institute's Scholars-in-Residence program.
