Weekly Commitment: Approximately 10 hours per week 

Wage Rate: $36.16/hour plus 4% vacation pay

The Caribbean and Black writing collective (CBWC) was established by faculty members within the Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy (ISUP) in collaboration with the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre in January 2021. The CBWC was created to provide students who relate to Caribbean and Black identities with a space to work on their assignments in a collaborative environment. Currently, faculty members participate in the collective to provide numeracy and writing support to students who participate in the collective. In order to continue building on this initiative, ISUP faculty members would like to hire a research assistant who is interested in becoming a member of the CBWC and enhancing the sustainability of CBWC. The research assistant may be asked to complete the following duties:

  1. Conduct research and develop a selected reading list that will be used as core literature that will inform research on the significance of anti-racist writing communities and mentorship

  2. Assist with drafting an ethics protocol that will be submitted to the University of Toronto’s Ethics Review Board

  3. Write detailed notes and observations at meetings of CBWC team leads and sessions of the CBWC

  4. Attend regularly scheduled meetings with supervisor and stakeholders

  5. Attend meetings of the Caribbean and Black Writing Collective

  6. Assist with providing writing and/or numeracy support at the CBWC Workshops

  7. Administer questionnaires and participant Information forms at meetings of the CBWC

  8. Assist with preparing grant proposals and reports

  9. Assist with designing an interview and questionnaire protocol

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Assistant Professor, Janine Rose. Only those who qualify for an interview will be contacted.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Ability to work collaboratively or in a team and independently

  • Must be able to communicate clearly in writing

  • Experience with writing literature reviews and writing annotated bibliographies

  • Experience and interest in equity and diversity initiatives including research on anti-black racism and anti- racism, more broadly

Preferred Qualifications: In addition to the qualifications mentioned above, the ideal candidate would have experience with providing writing and /or numeracy support and writing ethics protocols. We also encourage applications from graduate students who identify as BIPOC individuals.
