The 1-9-2 Chronicles: A Podcast Showcase by First-Year Students
Welcome to The 1-9-2 Chronicles: A Podcast Showcase by First-Year Students
We’re thrilled to introduce The 1-9-2 Chronicles, a captivating podcast series born out of a unique course at the University of Toronto Mississauga, Thinking Badly: Misinformation in the Information Age. This course delves into the challenges of science communication, exploring how misinformation in fields like medicine and climate change can fuel public mistrust. What sets this podcast apart? Every episode is designed and produced by first-year students. It’s an exciting blend of academic inquiry and creative media, where students step out of the traditional research paper format to tackle complex issues using the dynamic medium of podcasting.
The assignment, which started as a leap of faith, blossomed into an exceptional collection of episodes. Each group of students synthesized their semester’s research into engaging, well-informed episodes. The results? Professional-grade podcasts that blend deep academic knowledge with the art of storytelling. These episodes don’t just inform—they entertain, bringing scientific topics to life in ways that are relatable and thought-provoking.
With topics ranging from artificial intelligence and mental health to GMOs and CRISPR, the episodes cover an incredible spectrum of scientific and societal issues. Each student group offers a fresh perspective, and though the projects began with a focus on medicine and climate change, they extend far beyond. From the rise and fall of Theranos to the implications of herd behavior, each episode contributes to a larger narrative about how we consume and understand science today.
We’re proud to offer these episodes for public listening, celebrating the work and dedication of these talented students. We hope you enjoy exploring The 1-9-2 Chronicles as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it!
