Is ISP100 a required course?

If you plan to major in Anthropology (excluding Forensic Science), Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Physics, Political Science, Sociology (including Criminology, Law & Society), or Visual Studies, then ISP100 is required, and you are given first priority to enroll. However, students planning to major in other programs are also welcome to enroll in the course. We recommend checking the Academic Calendar for more information on program requirements.

Do I receive credit for taking ISP100?

Yes! ISP100 provides 0.5 credits that can count toward the 20.0 credits you need to graduate. Please note that ISP100 can be used to quality for POSt, but it cannot be used to satisfy Distribution Requirements.

Can I use ISP100 for my Distribution Requirements?

ISP100 cannot be used to satisfy your Distribution Requirements. However, ISP100 is counted towards your overall credit count and can be used to satisfy Degree Requirements if it is a required course for your program. For more information on distribution requirements, visit the Office of the Registrar.

Are there any high school prerequisites for ISP100?

No. There are no prerequisites for ISP100. In the first week of ISP100, students will complete the Writing Check-In, a written assessment of students’ writing skills. The results of the Writing Check-In will help identify those students who would benefit from participating in ISP010: Basics of Writing in English. Any student who does not successfully pass the Writing Check-In should unenroll from ISP100 and enroll in ISP010. Once a student has completed ISP010, they can re-enroll in ISP100 in a subsequent term.

How do I know if I have to take ISP010 before ISP100?

In the first week of ISP100, students will complete the Writing Check-In (WCI), a written assessment of students’ writing skills. Any student who does not successfully pass the Writing Check-In should unenroll from ISP100 and enroll in ISP010. I enrolled in ISP100 on ACORN, but the course appears with a status of INT. What does this mean?

Department approval is required for enrolment in ISP100. This course will appear with a status of "Interim" until we have had a chance to review students’ requests. Students pursuing programs in Anthropology (excluding Forensic Science), Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Physics, Political Science, Sociology (including Criminology, Law & Society), or Visual Studies receive first priority to enroll in the course as it is required course for these programs.

What is the Writing Check-In?

The Writing Check-In (WCI) is a mandatory written assessment, designed to assess students' writing skills, for student intending to take ISP100. It takes place during the first class of the semester and is graded on a pass/fail basis. Students must receive a passing grade in the WCI in order to remain in ISP100. Those who are unsuccessful in the WCI will be removed from ISP100 and encouraged to take ISP010: Basics of Writing in English. Therefore, is it essential that students enrolled in ISP100 attend the first class.
