2025 Dallas Smythe Memorial Lecture. March 20 | 7:00pm. Nicole Cohen, Associate Professor, University of Toronto. Crisis and Collective Response: Labour Organizing in Media.

We are pleased to announce that ICCIT Professor Nicole Cohen will be delivering the 2025 Dallas Smythe Memorial Lecture on March 20th at Simon Fraser University (SFU).

The Dallas Smythe Memorial Lecture has honoured critical scholars in the field of political economy of communications since 1993. Organized by SFU’s School of Communication, the lecture brings together faculty, students and the broader community to honour the work and research of Dallas Smythe, who taught at SFU from 1976 until he passed away in 1992.

Cohen's talk, entitled Crisis and Collective Response: Labour Organizing in Media, will discuss the thousands of journalists and media workers who have unionized at media outlets in the United States and Canada over the past decade. Throughout, she will trace the history of labour activity within the new media industry, elaborating the motivations behind, gains made through, and communicative nature of this organization.

More information about the 2025 Dallas Smythe Memorial Lecture is available on the SFU website.
