SSHRC Partnership Engage Grants

Amount of funding: $7,000 to $25,000
Short description: These grants provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector. In addressing an organization-specific need, challenge and/or opportunity, these partnerships let non-academic organizations and postsecondary researchers access each other’s unique knowledge, expertise and capabilities on topics of mutual interest.

Jackman Humanities Institute (JHI) Faculty Research Fellowships
Deadline for Applications: September 17, 2024
Amount of funding: 12-month fellowships (held in residence at the JHI); 6-month research leaves; the JHI provides teaching replacement funding for fellows
Short description: The Chancellor Jackman Faculty Research Fellowship (JHIFRF) is a six-month or twelve-month award for research faculty members in the tenured and continuing streams who hold the rank of Associate Professor or higher. The work of the 12-month Circle of Fellows will focus on an annual theme.

SSHRC Insight Grants

Amount of funding: $7,000 to $400,000
Short description: Insight Grants support research excellence in the social sciences and humanities. Funding is available to both emerging and established scholars for research initiatives of two to five years.

SSHRC Partnership Development Grants

Amount of funding: $75,000 to $200,000
Short description: These grants provide support over one to three years to teams/partnerships, led by a project director, to: develop research and/or related activities in the social sciences and humanities—these can include knowledge mobilization and the meaningful involvement of students and emerging scholars, by fostering new partnerships with existing and/or potential partners; or design and test new partnership approaches for research and/or related activities that can result in best practices or models—these can either be adapted by others or have the potential to be scaled up to a regional, national or international level.

BRN Faculty Fellows (Black Research Network)
Deadline for Applications: October 31, 2024
Amount of funding: $10,000
Short description: For the time dedicated to our Faculty Fellows program, the BRN will provide $10,000 (CAD) in research project support, which may be used for research, course release, or stipend. Additionally, BRN Comms will collaborate with faculty fellows to enhance the amplification of their research on BRN platforms.

RSAF (Research and Scholarly Activities Fund)

Amount of funding: Up to $15,000
Short description: The Research and Scholarly Activity Fund (RSAF) provides seed support of up to $15,000 to catalyze well-defined early-stage research activities that can lead to external funding. Proposals that focus on incremental expansion/advancement of existing research activities will not be supported.

Connaught Community Partnership Award

Amount of funding: Up to $50,000 per year for one or two years, for up to a total of $100,000
Short description: This initiative is intended to help create new collaborative research partnerships, or nurture early-stage partnerships, between the University and community partners, that support research driven by needs and priorities identified by community partners. Funded partnership projects will equitably engage community partners and let non-academic organizations and university researchers access each other’s unique knowledge, expertise, and capabilities on issues of mutual interests. Partnerships supported should show potential to evolve into more established relationships that will attract funding through external agencies, for example, the SSHRC Partnership Grant programs.

Black, Indigenous, and/or Racialized Scholar/Research Grant Program
Deadline for Applications: December 12, 2024
Amount of funding: Up to $10,000 for research, research creation, or program development; up to $2,000 for workshops and outreach.
Short description: Grants will seed exploratory research and collaborative endeavors that address questions of racial inequity, social justice, and/or advance UTM’s commitment to Answering the Call: Wecheehetowin, the University’s response and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s final reports. This program is designed to support two groups of researchers at UTM: (1) Black, Indigenous, and/or racialized researchers regardless of research area; (2) any faculty member with research that addresses racism, social justice, and/or decolonization.

English & Drama Chair’s Discretionary Funds
Deadline for Applications: Rolling
Amount of funding: $17,000 for 2024-25 across all applications
Short description: These funds can be deployed to enhance student experience, but we can also use them to support faculty research and publication, e.g., a quick grant to support the creation of an index, to finance image permissions, or to contribute to a publishing subvention. Priority will be given to non-tenured faculty, to colleagues without other forms of support, or to colleagues under pressure to meet research deadlines.

English & Drama Conference Funding
Deadline for Applications: Rolling
Amount of funding: Up to $1,500 to support conference funding annually; funds should be used within one year of receipt.
Short description: Funding is available to all full-time, LTA/CLTA and SL3 faculty on a non-competitive basis to support conference travel and registration.
