How can writing change the world?
Find out in the NEW course - ENG104H5F: Literature and Social Change
Join us in Fall 2024 for a NEW course introducing you to social change literatures from around the world. We’ll explore how writing and narrative contribute to some major social and environmental movements from the nineteenth century to the present. We’ll also study social change literatures with an eye to developing your own writing skills, including a major independent project on a course-inspired topic of your choice, and opportunities to practice editing and publishing through our “Literature and Social Change”-themed special issue of English & Drama’s student journal.
Course Highlights:
- Study social change literatures across continents, movements, and time periods, from a nineteenth-century abolitionist bestseller to climate justice video poems.
- Learn to analyze advocacy literatures in many genres, including memoirs, essays, speeches, comic, poetry, film, and primary documents.
- Practice your own socially engaged writing skills through your major independent project.
- Gain editing and publishing experience through our class-edited journal special issue.
