Project overview

Our project aims to highlight the stories of the lived experiences of racialized and immigrant people living in Peel Region during the pandemic. This project responds to the immediate need to address the impacts of COVID-19 on the health of underserved, urban, racialized and immigrant populations who bear a disproportionate risk of ill health. We are collaborating with Peel Public Health and Trillium Health partners to ensure that resident-informed programming and initiatives are developed in the future.

Triple Focus

The project has three parts that each have a different focus to understand the COVID-19 Journey of Peel Region residents. Pandemic experiences are difficult and complex topics to understand, and our interdisciplinary research team is tackling this project from three areas of focus:

Why Peel Region?

  • With over 1.5 million residents, Peel Region is one of Canada’s largest and most demographically diverse health regions1
  • Peel Region’s population consists of more immigrants than non-immigrants2
    • Most are from India, then Pakistan, the Philippines, Jamaica, and China2
  • Peel Region has been hard-hit by COVID-19:
    • With 3.7% of Canada’s population, the region has experienced 7.6% of all lab-confirmed cases and 4.3% of hospitalizations 3,4
