Connaught Scholarship

The Connaught Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic excellence to an incoming graduate student. During the first year of award the scholarship provides financial support toward stipend and reduces the student’s obligatory teaching assistantship to only 50 hours. The Connaught covers all academic fees during the year(s) the award is tenable.

Value and duration

First Year

  • $15,000 plus academic and incidental fees
  • Instalments of $5000 are payable by cheque directly to student at the beginning of each term, usually in September, January and May.
  • UHIP fees would be included for international students.

Second, Third and Fourth Years

  • $15,000 funding package to be paid by the graduate unit. The package can include fellowships, teaching or research assistantships.
  • Academic, incidental and UHIP fees to be paid by the Connaught Fund.

Fifth Year

  • Graduate units may elect to renew for a fifth year (i.e. one year Master’s, 4 years Doctoral or 5 years Doctoral for direct entry students).
  • $15,000 plus academic, incidental and UHIP fees to be paid by the graduate unit.
  • University covers the cost of the differential fee for international students.

Eligibility

  • The Connaught Scholarship is an entrance award aimed at attracting excellent international students who are not eligible for federal awards. Students eligible to compete for NSERC will not be considered for Connaught awards.
  • The award will be available to new full-time students entering a Master’s or Doctoral program in September.
  • Students who transfer from the Master’s to the Doctoral program are not eligible.

Conditions of award

  • The award may not be held for more than one year in the Master’s program.
  • Students may not hold other major (>$10,000) awards while holding the Connaught Scholarship.
  • Connaught recipients who receive an Ontario Graduate Scholarship will receive only the academic, incidental (and UHIP where appropriate) fees from the Connaught Scholarship fund. The $15,000 cash portion of the award will be cancelled. However, students will be eligible for a renewal of the full Connaught Scholarship in subsequent years provided they meet the eligibility requirements stated above.
  • Connaught recipients must apply for an Ontario Graduate Scholarship in order to be considered for a renewal of the Connaught Scholarship.
  • An offer of an award will be cancelled if written acceptance is not received by the deadline stated in the award offer letter
  • To maintain and renew their award, students are required to be in full-time attendance at the University of Toronto, to maintain an A- average and to be making satisfactory progress toward the completion of their degree as determined by their department.
  • Repayment of the award is required if a student is in full-time attendance fewer than 14 weeks in any term.
  • In accordance with Section 56 of the Canadian Income Tax Act, the Connaught Scholarship (including fees) is considered taxable income.

Application

Students are not required to submit an application for consideration. The Department nominates students from the incoming class.

Renewals

SGS will renew current recipients’ Connaught Scholarships at the recommendation of the Department, as long as they are eligible for the renewal.

Please note that students must have applied for an OGS in order for their Connaught Scholarship to be renewed.

Connaught Scholarships will be cancelled for students who subsequently receive an NSERC or OGS. Students receiving an OGS will be offered a top-up award to ensure that they are not financially disadvantaged.
