Defy Gravity: The Campaign for the University of Toronto

In December 2021, the University of Toronto launched its tri-campus Defy Gravity campaign. Through a profound commitment to inclusive excellence, the campaign seeks to leverage U of T’s location, strengthen international partnerships, and reinvent undergraduate education. Seven Defy Gravity campaign themes support these objectives, and UTM’s initial slate of campaign marquee initiatives align with them and with our campus’s Strategic Framework. In partnership with donors and others, UTM will advance:

  • drug discovery for rare cancers and other orphan diseases
  • robotics for an increasingly automated workforce
  • mental health for an increasingly unwell youth
  • sustainability for an increasingly warming planet
  • improved health outcomes for increasingly aging and marginalized populations
  • justice for Indigenous communities
  • the power of the arts and culture to create flourishing

These strategic imperatives comprise a unified campus purpose of wellness, capaciously understood: the wellness of our economies and planet, the wellness of our bodies and minds, the wellness of our cultures and marginalized communities.
