About the Program
Looking to complement your academic learning with hands-on professional experience in student affairs and services? The UTM OISE Higher Education Internship is a unique paid opportunity designed exclusively for OISE students enrolled in a Master’s level program in higher education.
OISE students are paired with a professional staff member from one of UTM’s Student Affairs and Services or partner departments for a tailored project-based internship experience. Projects are based on departmental needs and the skill set of the intern, so no two experiences are alike!

Role & Responsibilities
The intern works within an assigned UTM Student Affairs and Services or partner departments to complete a specific project within the allotted term. They meet regularly with their staff supervisor and faculty member to ensure consistent academic and professional progress towards their goals.
Responsibilities include:
- Completing all academic course assignments;
- Completing all project components under the guidance of the staff supervisor;
- Conducting program evaluations/assessments as necessary;
- Job shadowing within the assigned functional area of student affairs/partner unit;
- Investigating best practices related to assigned projects and making recommendations accordingly;
- Supporting students and making appropriate referrals where necessary;
- Supporting existing programming and initiatives as required;
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Class Availability:
Students must be available on Tuesdays 12-2pm during the internship term to attend class meetings (there will be online and in-person options on the St. George campus).
Students complete the LHA1858H (Internships in Student Services 1) course alongside their internship project over one or two semesters. The internship requires 7-12 hours of work per week (usually, one full day with the selected department).
Second Internship:
For students applying to a second internship (LHA1859: Internship in Student Services 2), the following requirements also apply:
- Students should be in the Student Development and Student Services stream
- Excellent assessment results from LHA1858 internship
- One of the internship positions (LHA1858H or LHA1859H) should encompass an 8-month period
- To be submitted to the course instructor:
- A letter of recommendation from the internship supervisor from LHA1858H
- A personal statement (750 words maximum) that includes:
- A clear and concise statement outlining career goals, explaining how a second internship aligns with these goals and contributes to their professional development.
- An outline of specific skills gained from the first internship that will be applicable to the second internship.
- Motivation for seeking a second internship, what the student aims to achieve, and how they plan to contribute to the organization.
- Updated Resume that includes information on active participation in extracurricular activities related to their field of study, demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.
- Confirmation of availability to commit to the internship schedule and complete the required hours (minimum of 120 hours).
