Mourning the loss of Teresa Jose
UTM Student Affairs & Services and Accessibility Services are mourning the loss of Teresa Jose, Assistant Director, Accessibility Services. Teresa advised students with disabilities, liaised with academic departments on accommodations, supported staff and students in service delivery, and provided thoughtful leadership throughout her time at UTM.
Over her 29 years here, Teresa's career spanned the transition and growth of Erindale College's "satellite" Special Services for Students with Disabilities to today's comprehensive UTM Accessibility Services department.
Teresa holds a reputation for compassion and care of our UTM students, and a generosity of spirit with colleagues across departments.
With an outsized laugh that seemed impossible considering her physical size, Teresa provided light and kindness to all who she came in contact with. We know that for many, Teresa left an impression that will not be forgotten, of a woman who could face the hardest circumstances with warmth and steadiness.
Her relationships with those in her department, the students she advised (past and present), and those across SAS encompassed integrity, honesty, and optimism. She advocated that we live our life well; this philosophy she encompassed until her very last moment.
Teresa was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, godmother, friend, mentor and colleague. As per her last wishes, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Canadian Cancer Society at http://support.cancer.ca/
“Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there,
Keep me alive in your beautiful hearts with unforgettable memories. Teach others what you've learned from me and I will live on forever."
The University of Toronto provides support services, including grieving support, for students through the UTM Health & Counselling Centre and MySSP and for employees through its Employee and Family Assistance Program.
