Beryl Zesseu
I am currently doing an M.A. in the Educational Leadership and Policy program with OISE while focusing on the concept and implementation of culturally responsive practices within schools. I do this part-time while teaching full-time as a French Teacher at the Toronto District School Board.
If you could start university again, what would you do differently?
I would most likely join more social groups.
What motivated you as a student in your program?
My motivation was to become a French teacher. The topic and concepts converted within this program allowed me to strengthen my knowledge of linguistic, literary and cultural elements within the French language. Now, I can draw on my learning experience and knowledge to effectively teach French within various programs (e.g. Extended French and Core French).
How is your major/minor/specialist related to your current work?
I majored in French and did a double minor in sociology and professional writing and communication (PWC). My major and minor (particularly the sociology minor) has allowed me to earn the qualifications suitable to teach French as a second language and social sciences. Nonetheless, the PWC minor has enabled me to acquire knowledge on various writing forms and styles, which I have been able to incorporate and explore as I teach French/topics in French.
What did you learn in your program that is applied to your current role?
I learn to work carefully and creatively while applying critical thinking skills. This has allowed me to nurture a learning space that harvests critical thinking skills, creativity and diligence as students take on work.
