The theme of the competition was "One World, One Family", and participants performed both a speech and a talent as part of the finals for Ontario and Manitoba. Diore's speech highlighted the cultural diversity of Jamaica and the integration of various cultures, as evidenced in the island's cuisine, language, and customs, while Maya shared about the diverse backgrounds of her family and friends and how learning Chinese has provided an opportunity to not only learn about a new language and culture, but also to learn to appreciate each other's differences, break down barriers, and build friendships. For the talent portion, Diore sang a popular Chinese song called "今生缘" (Destined in this Life), and Maya sang a famous classic love song called "月亮代表我的心" (The Moon Represents My Heart) while playing the ukulele.

The "Chinese Bridge" competition is a global Chinese language proficiency contest that aims to foster mutual learning and exchange, ignite students' enthusiasm for learning Chinese, and promote both the language and an appreciation for Chinese culture. The competition is sponsored by the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Toronto and was hosted by the Chinese Culture and Education Society of Canada.

Congratulations to Diore and Maya for their achievements after having taken CHI103H5 and CHI104H5 with us this past year! We wish you continued success in your studies in Chinese and hope that the language opens up many doors of opportunity for you!

Thank you also to Dr. Xinliang Jiang for his support and for encouraging his students to showcase their Chinese language skills!
