Below are some common scholarships and fellowships available to graduate students from external sponsors.

Tri-Agency Funding

Canada Graduate Scholarships - Master’s program
(CGS-M) 

Overview: This scholarship is meant to fund students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. 

Duration: 1 year 

Value: $17,500

(CGS-D) 

Overview: This scholarship is meant to fund students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. 

Duration: 3 years

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

Overview: This highly competitive scholarship is meant to fund students who demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health.

Duration: 3 years

Value: $50,000/year

Canada Graduate Scholarships – 
Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements

Overview: This supplement supports pursuit of research experiences at research institutions abroad. Supplements are available to active CGS (master’s or doctoral) or eligible Vanier CGS holders.

CIHR Doctoral Foreign Study Award

Overview: The Doctoral Foreign Study Award (DFSA) provides special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field abroad.

Duration: Up to 3 years

NSERC Graduate Scholarships

NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships –Doctoral program 
(PGS-D)

Overview: This scholarship provides financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in an eligible doctoral program in the natural sciences or engineering.

Duration: 3 years

Value: $21,000/year

NSERC Indigenous Student Ambassadors

Overview: The NSERC Indigenous Student Ambassadors (NISA) grant aims to engage Indigenous students and fellows in promoting interest and participation in the natural sciences and engineering (NSE) by visiting Indigenous communities and schools in Canada.

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships

Overview: SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships support high-calibre students engaged in doctoral programs in the social sciences and humanities. 

Duration: 12, 24, 36 or 48 months

Mitacs

Accelerate Fellowship

Overview: The Mitacs Accelerate Fellowship provides a long-term funding and internship option for master’s and PhD students. Recipients can also access professional development training.

Value: $20,000/year

Duration: 1.5-2 years (Master's); 3-4 years (PhD)

Overview: Globalink offers travel funding between Canada and several international partners.

Business Strategy Internship

Overview: The Business Strategy Internship (BSI) provides $10,000 or $15,000 to students who develop innovative projects designed to help an organization thrive.

Value: $10,000 or $15,000

Ontario Graduate Scholarship

Overview: Scholarship for students in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels.

Value: $10,000 for 2 consecutive terms or $15,000 for 3 consecutive terms, with graduate unit contributing one-third the cost of the total award received

Duration: 1 year (2 or 3 consecutive terms, depending on graduate program)
