The University of Toronto was ranked among the top universities globally in five subjects: sociology (2nd), medical technology (5th), public health (7th), finance (8th), and management (10th). This ranking was found in the latest Shanghai Ranking Consultancy rankings by subject

More than 1,900 universities across 96 countries and regions are listed in the 2024 edition of the Shanghai subject rankings, which covers 55 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences. This year included a larger number of indicators, with the new criteria including the number of faculty who are: recipients of significant awards, chief editors of academic journals, leaders in international academic organizations and are considered highly cited researchers. The esteemed and highly accomplished UTM sociology and criminology professors are few of the many professionals in this area across the tri-campuses. 

U of T also stands in the top 100 globally in 42 subjects, as part of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2024. Of all Canadian universities, U of T ranked first in 27 subjects—a testament to the excellence of our institutions.

U of T sociology has consistently ranked in the top 10 globally. At UTM Sociology, we specialize in the areas of criminology, law and society, the sociology of gender, the sociology of food and culture, and the sociology of inequality. 

Of the tri-campuses, UTM sociology is the only department that offers students an internship course within sociology and criminology, law and society. We offer our students opportunities to apply their education and gain a glimpse into the types of careers they can pursue post-graduation. Our department at UTM also offers students unique ways to get involved with their program and fellow classmates, as well as incentives for their achievements. 

Overall, this ranking is an exemplification of the dedication and quality of education at U of T, and emphasizes the academic excellence of Sociology as an emerging discipline in a rapidly changing society.
