The Research Opportunity Program (ROP) enables students to become involved in original research supervised by a faculty member. Students learn research methods and share in the excitement and discovery of acquiring new knowledge while earning a half (0.5) or full (1.0) credit.
Each ROP course code (SOC299, 399, 499) is associated with a student’s standing in their degree (based on credits earned); this acts as a type of prerequisite. Additionally, each code has course prerequisites.

If you are a student who does not have all of the prerequisites, you may wish to contact the ROP supervisor before applying to the project to inquire whether your application would be considered. There may be circumstances under which an instructor (the ROP supervisor) may make exceptions to the prerequisites in consultation with the department. For example, an instructor may indicate that they will consider an application from a Sociology minor student with relevant course experience, though they will not have taken SOC221H5 or SOC222H5.
Descriptions of the projects are usually available online by mid-February each year.
