Meet the Instructors

Headshot of Prof. Chiu-Hung Chen

Prof. Chiu-Hung Chen is Associate Professor, Teaching Stream and Coordinator of Chinese Language and Culture program in the Department of Language Studies. Her life has been intricately connected with languages. She has embarked on a journey that involves acquiring languages, instructing in Mandarin Chinese, and guiding courses dedicated to language teaching and learning. With a specialization in second language pedagogy, she consistently shares the happiness and profound influence of learning languages and cultures through her commitment to teaching and research.

Dr. Jing Li is a sessional lecturer of Chinese literature and culture in the Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga. She obtained her Ph.D. in classical Chinese literature from Peking University. Her research is situated in the field of Chinese literature and culture, with a special focus on cross-cultural interaction and integration.

Dr. Xinliang Jiang graduated from Newcastle University in the UK with a PhD in Linguistics focusing on the second language acquisition and phonetics and phonology. He has taught linguistics courses at Newcastle University and Chinese language courses at Durham University. Currently working at the University of Toronto, Mississauga, Canada, as a sessional lecturer in Chinese. His current research interests include: second language Chinese acquisition and teaching, Chinese teaching assisted by ChatGPT, and Chinese phonetics and phonology.


Frequently Asked Questions

This program is for campers 7-12 years of age.  As there will be no exceptions made, all children attending must be the required minimum age by the first day of the camp session.  If your child is not the listed age for the camp program, please do not register them for our program.  We look forward to having them attend once they have reached the minimum age requirement.

We are pleased to offer two (2) one-week sessions this summer:  

Week 1: July 8-12, 2024  

Week 2: July 15-19, 2024  

*Registration for both weeks are also available.

Our camp day begins at 9:00am.  Parent(s)/Guardian(s) are asked to sign-in their Campers any time after 8:45am.  

Our camp day will end at 3:30pm.  All Authorized Caregivers must produce government issued identification before a Camper can be dismissed by staff. 

As campers will be grouped by linguistic fluency into smaller groups on the first day of each session, Chinese Language Summer Camp is open to any student aged 7-12 years with any level of fluency. 

Campers are to wear comfortable clothing/shoes and bring with them a water bottle (no glass, please!), sunscreen and a hat.  On cooler summer days, it may be handy to have a jacket or sweatshirt.  

Campers also need to bring a healthy, sustainable lunch and snacks.  To keep all Campers safe, we also ask that lunches and snacks not contain any allergen items such as peanuts and tree nuts.  Campers are not permitted to share food.

All learning materials will be provided unless otherwise. 

Our Summer Day Camp operates in shared spaces with University of Toronto Mississauga’s students, faculty and staff and is not nut free environment.  All Campers and Staff are regularly reminded to ensure they do not bring snacks that contain peanuts, nuts and other common allergens to Camp.  

Please do not bring expensive equipment such as cell phones, music devices or game systems to camp. During camp hours, cell phones must be turned off and left in bags from 9 am to 3:30 pm.

Cancellations up to at least 5 business days prior to your child’s camp week will be refunded minus ten percent (-10%) administrative fee per child, per camp week. After this period, refunds will not be available. 

Receipts and registration confirmations are sent via email. Please ensure that your email address is correct when registering. Emails marked as private will not receive receipts or confirmations. Receipts are sent as attachments from utmla@utoronto.ca.
