The Centre for Child Development, Mental Health, and Policy (CCDMP) hosted UTM students, staff, and faculty and CCDMP community partners for their first art exhibit, Canvas Conversations: Art That Speaks from May 6–8, 2024 in the Maanjiwe nendamowinan building.

The three-day art exhibit was a celebration of the intersection between art and science, which is the focus of the CCDMP’s knowledge mobilization project, pip o. The pip o. Project adopts an arts-based approach to disseminate our research on child development to a wider and diverse audience. Project initiatives include a bi-annual magazine for parents and teachers, arts-based curriculum that promotes social-emotional development, and community events.

The illustrations showcased at the exhibit are straight from our pip o. Gazette magazine! The original artwork is created by artist and project art director, Pei-Yu Chang, inspired by CCDMP research and magazine articles. Magazine articles are written by the CCDMP research team and members, and each issue includes a piece written by an educator, a caregiver, and a youth in Ontario. Children’s artwork and reflections are also shared. These are important to include as we hope the magazine will provide insight from all angles to create a full, well-rounded picture of child development and mental health as it stands currently.

Attendees were also entered in a draw to win a signed art print by Pei-Yu Chang. Congratulations to Sanya and Anh who each won an original print! All students who completed the reflection form will receive recognition on their CCR.

On the same day, CCDMP community partners were invited to join a community symposium to continue the conversation about working together to continue to support children and families in the Peel Region.
