Sanctions are imposed when resolving cases of academic misconduct in accordance with the Code of Behaviour On Academic Matters. These sanctions can vary depending on factors such as the nature of the offence, the level at which the case is resolved, and on the student’s history of academic misconduct at the University of Toronto.
*Please note that any language in this website is superseded by the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters.
Sanctions At The Departmental Level
The sanctions that can be imposed at the Departmental Level include, but are not limited to, a mark of zero on the piece of academic work or a reduction in the mark of the piece of academic work.
Sanctions At The Divisional Level
The sanctions that can be imposed at the Divisional Level for a first offence may include the following:
A mark of zero on the assignment in question;
A further reduction from the final grade; and
An annotation on the transcript (for a specific period of time)
The sanctions that can be imposed at the Divisional Level when there is a prior history of academic misconduct, or when the offence is egregious in nature, may include the following:
A final grade of zero in the course;
A 12-month suspension from attending the University of Toronto; and
An annotation on the academic transcript (for a specific period of time)
Please note that these sanctions may vary. Additionally, please contact the International Education Centre (IEC) with inquiries on how sanctions (particularly suspensions) may impact your study permit or visa.
Sanctions At The Tribunal Level
Sanctions at the Tribunal level tend to be more severe than what would be imposed at other levels. For more information on potential sanctions that could be imposed at the Tribunal level, you may review Appendix C in the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters. Previous Tribunal decisions are available for viewing on the Academic Discipline page.

What is an annotation?
The annotation is a statement that will be applied onto your academic transcript and will remain there for the period of time outlined in the sanctions. During this period of time, if you order your academic transcript, the annotation will be visible.
After this period, the annotation will be removed from your academic transcript. However, the University will retain an internal record of the offence. If a subsequent allegation is brought against you, the University will consider your prior history of academic misconduct.
We understand that students may need to submit their academic transcript for graduate school admissions or employment. If you feel that the annotation may significantly impact your academic or professional prospects, please reach out to the Academic Integrity Office at UTM.
