Program Overview
The Centre for Student Engagement believes that all students can become great leaders. Leadership is about challenging yourself to become an agent of change not only for your growth but for the growth of the entire community.
Through utmLEAD, you can learn, practice, and develop your leadership skills while engaging with the UTM community. Explore various leadership topics such as public speaking, creative problem solving, active listening, and more during our utmLEAD workshops offered throughout the semester. Our workshops are designed so that all students can participate, regardless of their leadership experience level!
Our workshops will help you:
- Build your leadership knowledge through interactive workshops
- Enhance your resume by developing essential skills
- Practice and reflect on your experiences and learning
- Expand your network by engaging with peers and the UTM community
Attend a minimum of 3 workshops and receive a CCR notation!
Workshops
Explore various leadership topics through a series of five workshops facilitated by our student leaders. The workshops can be attended in any order and are offered multiple times through the Fall and Winter semesters.

Workshop 1: Leadership 101
What is leadership and what kind of leader are you? Attend this workshop to explore leadership theories, styles, and philosophies. Through the workshop activities and discussions, you will begin to realize your leadership potential and develop your personal approach to leadership. Additionally, you will explore the concept of leadership and how it is seen and applied in different roles and situations.

Workshop 2: Creative Problem-Solving
Develop a creative and innovative mindset for approaching problems and challenges. In this workshop, you will learn techniques and strategies for effective problem-solving when faced with challenges. You will learn and apply these strategies individually and in groups to help strengthen your problem-solving skills as a leader.

Workshop 3: Public Speaking 101
Whether on stage, in class, or with a group of friends, public speaking can be uncomfortable and scary. People often fear being judged by others and don’t know how to prepare or communicate their ideas appropriately. The purpose of this workshop is to help you gain confidence, practice public speaking, and develop strategies to support you.

Workshop 4: Active Listening & Conflict Resolution
How do you handle conflict? Conflict is a natural part of teams and relationships. Leaders need to know how to listen to their teams and work with them through conflict. Attend this workshop to learn and explore components of active listening and approaches to conflict resolution. Through activities, discussions, and reflections, you will get the chance to practice and apply your active listening and conflict-resolution skills.

Workshop 5: Team Building
Building a team is a core aspect of leadership. Leaders need to know how to create a dynamic team that can collaborate to meet goals effectively. Attend this workshop to learn and practice team-building strategies. You’ll get a chance to practice and apply the strategies in a fun and engaging way throughout this workshop.
