Professor Miles conducts research in two primary areas: morality and theories of human behavior. His work on morality addresses topics including how moral worldviews vary systematically across individuals, how morality is linked to political ideology and sexual behavior, and how moral culture can be measured. His work on human action draws on insights from cultural sociology and social psychology to demonstrate that behavior is shaped by both values and identities, and that these constructs can lead to consistencies in behavior across different contexts. He also examines the interconnections between behavior and dual-process models of cognition.
In addition to work on morality and behavior, Professor Miles has dabbled in in quantitative research methods including multiple imputation and fixed effect models for longitudinal data. He has taught workshops on a variety of quantitative topics including regression models for categorical data, techniques for handling missing data, and using statistical software, and currently teaches introductory statistics to a large class of eager undergraduates.
