Research at the University of Toronto Mississauga is thriving, with a healthy projection of growth, and our campus will continue to develop rapidly for the foreseeable future. UTM has established innovative research projects with collaborators across Canada and around the world, and, more locally, we have forged significant partnerships with the surrounding municipalities and industry, bolstering and defining our unique place within the GTA community.
On the Mississauga campus, expansion continues with the North Building and the Innovation Complex projects in full swing, and expected completion dates of August and September 2014 respectively. The North Building will provide new facilities for the Theatre and Drama program, office and dry-laboratory spaces for researchers in the Departments of Mathematical and Computational Sciences and from Psychology. The 6,300-square-metre Innovation Complex will be home to the newly established Institute for Management and Innovation (IMI), and will be a hub of activity and unique academic opportunities for students and staff, and will further provide research labs and lecture spaces.
UTM researchers generated nearly $9 million in research revenues in 2011-12, with funds supporting excellent and revolutionary work in the natural and life sciences, social sciences and in the humanities. Significant Tri-council grants have funded notable projects from all departments at UTM, and the research awards have been plentiful, with, to identify but a few, two UTM researchers were named U of T’s Inventors of the Year, a Philosophy professor appointed to the Royal Society of Canada and prestigious national awards recognizing graduate students for their work in Psychology.
I enthusiastically anticipate future developments on the horizon as the campus expands further and the research environment continues to flourish at University of Toronto Mississauga.
