“Short Drop”, a new short film from director and writer Romario Reyes, was produced by recent DVS graduate Mary-Rebekah Reyes. Reyes, who graduated from Art and Art History HBA in 2023 also has a degree from Sheridan. The film – which functions in the mode of horror-thriller – addresses both Trinbagonian folklore and the male gaze. In the film, a young woman who has attended a party is waiting for a taxi late at night. Only a private car appears which she hesitantly enters, the driving having assured her that she will be dropped off anywhere she likes. As the drive ensues, she grows increasingly uncomfortable with his unwanted gaze and prying conversation.

According to Reyes, “Short Drop” is “aimed at breathing new life into Trinbagonian folklore and storytelling”. As Reyes highlights, since Trinbagonian folklore is more typically an oral tradition, telling this story through the medium of film would be a way to renew the tradition by exploring contemporary issues.

After having had an impact at the Film and Folklore Festival in Trinidad and Tobago, the film will have its Canadian premiere at the Caribbean Tales International Film Festival (CTIFF) on September 16th at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto, Ontario.
